5 tips to improve disability awareness

A disability rights advocate shares simple ways to improve disability awareness and become more inclusive.

“Many employers and organizations — they’ll talk about diversity, equity, and inclusion, and you’ll never hear discussions about disability and access,” says Luke Labas, the ADA Coordinator and Project Manager at the Indianapolis Office of Disability Affairs. “Research actually shows that when you bring on people with disabilities, profit margins grow, it increases company morale, and increases productivity.”

  2. View disabilities in the context of civil rights
  3. Unlearn myths and stereotypes
  4. Provide accommodations; this helps everyone
  5. Update the way you communicate
