What Is High Fidelity Wraparound?

Wraparound provides a holistic, family-driven way of responding when youth experience serious mental health or behavioral challenges. Wraparound puts the child and family at the center. With support from a team of professionals and natural supports, the family’s ideas and perspectives about what they need and what will be helpful drive all of the work in Wraparound.

Every youth has a team that can include parents and/or guardians, social workers, medical providers, therapists, teachers, and others. A Wraparound Facilitator gets to know each family, their individual situation and specific needs, and helps them create a plan to achieve long-term goals. The plan always combines professional supports like medical providers and counselors as well as natural supports like relatives, friends, clergy, or coaches.

Families who participate are often involved with one or more systems, like child welfare, juvenile justice, or mental health agencies. When a family interacts with one of these systems, they may be given a referral for Wraparound. Facilitators are trained to address complex trauma, neglect, physical abuse, death of a parent, substance use disorders, and more. After first ensuring everyone is safe and all immediate needs are met, the facilitator will connect each family to community, low-or-no cost supports that work for them.
